Learning to delegate is awful … until it’s not.
I remember a time, not too long ago, when I believed mastering everything from engineering to sales was the hallmark of a great leader. I was always self-conscious that if I couldn’t answer every question, I would lose my employees’ respect.
Then, I exhausted myself in the pursuit of infinite knowledge and limitless work. I thought back to a piece of advice an undergrad professor once gave me: “Hire people smarter than you.”
It has been a journey and one that’s not over for me Advisory Solutions. But it has also been a sigh of relief. I couldn’t be happier. By embracing that I know nothing, I’ve somehow ended up knowing more than most. It’s a paradox that would make Socrates proud.
Delegation isn’t just a skill; it’s an adventure in humility and growth. Growth is humbling. You have to embrace it even if it feels unnatural.
